The vision of HOINA begins.
1972 HOINA incorporated in the United States.
1975 HOINA founder, Darlene Large, makes first trip to India.
1978 Trust in India is formed. First home is begun for seven boys.
1979 Two acres of land purchased for children's home in Tamil Nadu,
South India. Leprosy clinic built in Andhra Pradesh.
1980
Second home for handicapped children founded in Bapatla, A.P.
1981
First large home built with help from Lions Clubs International and
Lancaster-Lebanon PA Lions Club District 14D. Art and Drama Programs begin.
1982 Perali Free Clinic for eight villages founded. Second home for handicapped children founded in Chirala, A.P.
1986 Lalitha comes to the U.S. for surgery at Shriners Hospital
1987 Art School built near Madras orphanage. New dormitory built at Bapatla Hostel. Darlene meets Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
1988 Aruna comes to the U.S. for surgery.
1990 Cyclone destroys boy's home. New hostel is started in Bapatla, A.P. Lalitha comes to the U.S. for surgery.
1994 Cunningham-Gagnon English Medium School is founded at boys' home.
HOINA has 60 boys and 36 girls.
1998 Telegu Medium School is added at boys' home. New wing completed at girl's home.
1998 Sharbunisha comes to the U.S. for surgery.
2000 T. Nagaruju and M. Prakash come to the U.S. for surgery. First Penn State
Schreyer Honors College scholars
travel to India to participate in HOINA service learning project. 130 children in homes, 150 students at
Cunningham-Gagnon English School, 60 students at Telegu Medium School. Eight water buffalo launch HOINA's animal husbandry
program.
2001 20 acres are purchased near Vizakhaputnam for new boys’
home.
2004 Repairs are made to the girls' home due to earthquake
damage. New boys' home completed.
2005 Tsunami hits Southern India. HOINA responds with an addition
to the girls' home. Program to feed village widows begins in
Tsunami-stricken, impoverished village. HOINA reaches 100 children at both the boys' and girls'
homes.
2006 Staff House completed at boys' campus. Activities Center at
girls' home completed. Chandrasekhar receives heart surgery.
